Japan quick strike beats North Korea; South Korea held by Thailand in Asia qualifying

Japan scored after just 90 seconds and held out North Korea to win 1-0 on Thursday and maintain its perfect start in the second round of Asian qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Ao Tanaka's strike at the National Stadium gave the host three wins from three Group B games. With just three points from the first three group games, North Korea needs a result on Tuesday against the same opponent in Pyongyang.
