Nunez scores twice as a substitute to give 10-man Liverpool a stunning victory at Newcastle

Electric Nunez

Liverpool pulled off an incredible 2–1 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday, thanks to two late goals from Darwin Nunez, who came on as a substitute in the 77th minute. The Uruguayan scored his first league goals since April, when he netted against Leeds United. Nunez overshadowed Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, who had given his team the lead and seemed to end their 13-game winless streak against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the league.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was fortunate not to be sent off after he fouled Gordon, having already been booked, but he made a costly error in the 25th minute when he lost the ball to Gordon, who finished calmly past Alisson Becker. Liverpool’s situation worsened shortly after, when Virgil van Dijk was shown a red card by referee John Brooks for bringing down Alexander Isak just outside the box. The VAR confirmed the decision.

Newcastle dominated the game with a man advantage, and Alisson made a superb save to tip Miguel Almiron’s fierce volley onto the bar in the 36th minute. Almiron wasted another great chance early in the second half, blasting the ball over the bar, and he hit the post in the 76th minute.

Liverpool changed the game when they brought on Nunez, who equalised when Sven Botman failed to clear the ball, allowing Nunez to fire it across Nick Pope and into the far corner. The game looked set for a draw, but Nunez had other ideas. He scored again in stoppage time with a similar strike to break Newcastle’s hearts and spark wild celebrations from Liverpool’s players and coach Klopp on the field.

“I am very happy for the team and to be able to help them,” Nunez said with a smile to Sky Sports, with Alisson acting as his translator. “The team played really well after we went down to 10 men. We work hard for these moments, and I am happy to score two goals to help the team,” he added.
